Development Process
The Preconception Health Care Tool was developed using the Centre for Effective Practice's integrated knowledge translation approach. A working group comprised of a nurse practitioner, a family physician, and CEP staff conducted a comprehensive search, review, and appraisal of existing clinical evidence. Through this process the working group identified health system and clinical practice gaps, and specific opportunities to respond to the needs of end users – primary care providers. The tool was then tested and refined based on the feedback from individuals and organizations with expertise in maternal and infant care, as well as providers who practice comprehensive family medicine (see Acknowledgements section).
The following process map demonstrates the detailed approach taken by CEP to develop the Preconception Health Care Tool.
