Active Projects at the Centre

The Genetics Education Project

The goals of the Genetics Education Project (GEP) were to facilitate the delivery of genetics services by primary care providers and to develop effective models for genetics education.

Knowledge Support Service

This service provides a best practice support visit on Diabetes Care to primary care practitioners.

Collaborative Care

The Centre for Effective Practice, along with its partners, is committed to advancing collaborative care within an evidence framework - for the benefit of patients and providers alike. Our current projects are focused on moving clinical practice guidelines into practice in interprofessional primary care settings.

Cancer Screening Toolkit 2009

The Centre for Effective Practice, along with the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division and Cancer Care Ontario developed the patient education publication 'Testing for Cancer: My Options. My choice.' We hope that this will be a useful tool for clinicians to promote cancer screening to patients.

The information in this booklet will help patients to understand the tests that are available today and answer many questions they will have. It will also help them explore personal values around making health decisions. Personal values are influenced by the things that are important to individuals (e.g., family, career and community) and how they deal with stress (casually or with high anxiety). Knowing more about testing for cancer is important to make an informed decision.

Influenza Immunization Toolkit 2008

Influenza season is upon us. Influenza is a potentially severe respiratory illness and is responsible for an increased number of healthcare provider visits, hospitalizations, and deaths. By working together and conveying the importance of immunization, we can help lower the number of cases and reduce the impact that influenza has on Ontario’s health care system.

In an effort to support healthcare providers in providing the best care to their patients, the Centre for Effective Practice, in partnership with the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (www.npao.org), Ontario Pharmacists’ Association (www.opatoday.com) and Ontario College of Family Physicians (www.ocfp.on.ca) have prepared a toolkit of materials. This toolkit provides an overview of influenza, outlines the evidence, contraindications, side effects, and includes information on prevention.

Once again, the Government of Ontario is providing all residents aged 6 months and older with access to the influenza vaccine. Clinicians’ role in recommending this vaccine is vital, so it is important to have all the information regarding the vaccine on hand this season so that patients can be assisted in making an educated decision.

During the month of October, the Centre for Effective Practice offered a series of online workshops to compliment the key messages outlined in the influenza toolkit. Download a copy of the presentation.
